April 2019 – Lauriane Lebrun, Marketing & Communications Coordinator
The Lamprey River, one of New Hampshire’s largest watersheds, runs from Northwood, NH to Great Bay. Home to a variety of habitat types, beautiful scenery, and several threatened animal species, the river is protected under both the NH Rivers Management and Protection Program and the National Park Service’s National Wild and Scenic Rivers System.
Two of Lexian’s clients, the Lamprey River Advisory Committee (LRAC) and the Lamprey River Watershed Association (LRWA), are working to enhance and protect this bountiful river.
The LRWA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that has been promoting “the restoration, conservation, wise development and use of the natural resources of the Lamprey River” since 1983. LRWA volunteers help further the organization’s mission by:
- Advocating for the best interests of the river and watershed
- Monitoring the Lamprey River’s water quality
- Hosting activities such as canoe/kayak outings and trail walks to raise awareness of the river’s recreational value
- Educating the public through lectures and workshops about conservation, pollution, and the history of the river
The LRAC, also known as Lamprey River Wild & Scenic, formed in 1991 as a result of the NH Rivers Management and Protection Program designation. LRAC’s primary responsibilities include:
- Monitoring nearby projects that could impact the Lamprey River and its tributaries
- Monitoring the sale or donation of any state-owned land along the river
- Developing and implementing a River Management Plan to protect and enhance the river’s history, wildlife habitats, and recreational assets
Although the LRAC and the LRWA are two distinct organizations, they often work together.
