February 2019 – Lauriane Lebrun, Marketing & Communications Coordinator

Based in Durham, NH, Betty J. Borry Breast Cancer Retreats is giving women battling breast cancer a chance to live “a fully engaged, joyful life” after diagnosis.

Adventure Weekend, founded by Betty J. Borry and Ellen Moran in 1995, began as an annual nature retreat and support group.  The retreat invited “women of all ages and stages of breast cancer [to] adapt and prevail” through outdoor activities including ropes courses, team building exercises, kayaking, yoga, snowshoeing, and hiking.

Even after Betty’s death in 2001, the Adventure Weekend program continued on, helping women get “outdoors to play, explore, learn and grow with other women who share the journey beyond breast cancer.”  In 2002, current BJBBCR Executive Director and founding board member Cynthia Cote established Betty J. Borry Breast Cancer Retreats as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and expanded upon the vision of Adventure Weekend by setting up additional retreats in the fall and winter.

Currently, BJBBCR is gearing up for its 2019 Winter Retreat to be held March 8-10 at the AMC Highland Center in Bretton Woods, NH.  Scheduled activities for the weekend include snowshoe hikes, walking trails, fireside relaxation, and expressive/healing arts sessions.  As is the case with all BJB retreats, the weekend will provide breast cancer survivors with “the tools to develop new behaviors and coping mechanisms as well as a social network of support.”  Although registration for this event is now closed, interested women are invited to put their names on the retreat waitlist.
