McGregor Memorial EMS was founded in 1968 in memory of Dr. George G. McGregor, an esteemed Durham, NH physician. Today, this nonprofit organization provides emergency healthcare and education to the NH Seacoast Region. With the support of over 70 volunteers, including EMTs and paramedics, McGregor operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The organization is the primary emergency ambulance service for the University of NH and for the towns of Durham, Lee, and Madbury. In addition, McGregor offers CPR courses and training for individuals interested in becoming EMTs or AEMTs.
As a nonprofit, McGregor’s operating expenses are covered in part by charitable donations. The organization’s Annual Fund Drive is an appeal for donations to help purchase life-saving equipment such as respirators, defibrillators, and blanket warmers. Although these items (and high-quality EMS in general) are expensive, McGregor’s model is highly cost-effective. Thanks to volunteers, donors, insurance coverage, and the fact that four communities split the expense of McGregor’s services, the cost to taxpayers is low. Plus, the organization has received exceptional reviews, with over 99% of patients agreeing that the McGregor crew provided them with “skillful and competent” care.
